How to Find Your Windows Device Name

Audience: Fullerton College faculty and staff

Overview: Fullerton College staff may need their Windows computer’s device name to log in remotely or general IT troubleshooting (For IT staff to remote into a device). This article explains how to find the device name using Windows Settings.

Prerequisites

  • A Fullerton College Staff Email (e.g., [email protected]).
  • A Windows computer (desktop or laptop) managed by Fullerton College.

Instructions

Step 1: Open Windows Settings

- Click the Start button (Windows icon, bottom-left corner).

- Click Settings (gear icon) in the Start menu.

  • Alternatively, type “Settings” in the search bar next to Start and press Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to About

- In Settings, scroll down and select System.

- Scroll to the bottom and click About.

  • Alternatively, type “About your PC” in the Settings search bar (top of window) and press Enter.

Step 3: Find the Device Name

- Under Device specifications, locate Device name (e.g., FC-WKS-12345).

- Note the name for remote login or include it in your trouble ticket to the ACT.

Troubleshooting

Can’t open Settings?

  • Press Windows key + I to open Settings directly.
  • Restart your computer and retry.
  • Contact the ACT Helpdesk.
