Using the Microsoft Authenticator with limited network connectivity

Updated on

Generally the Microsoft Authenticator app requires a network connection via Wi-Fi or Cell data.  If you are traveling outside of United States, or if you are in a location with poor or no internet connection, the Microsoft Authenticator can still be used to create Verification Codes for sign-in without a network connection.  Additionally, if you are currently using Text SMS messaging for your authentication codes, and are in a location where your current phone number may not work - the Microsoft Authenticator with Verification Codes will provide a reliable method of signing in.

If you are already using the Microsoft Authenticator? You're already done! Have a safe trip!

If you are only using the "text message method", continue reading to avoid any disruptions in FC services while out of town.

"My cell phone is already setup"

Yes, you may have your phone number already setup as the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method to log into your FC Student email...

However, since you will be traveling abroad you will need to use the Microsoft Authenticator Application (available on iOS and Android) to log into your FC account.

How To:

Step 1. On a computer click on the following link to access the Fullerton College Microsoft Office 365 page https://o365.fullcoll.edu/

Step 2. Click on Sign-In

Step 3. Type your entire Fullerton College student email address.  If your student ID number was, 12345678 your Fullerton College student email address would be [email protected].  Then click Next.

Step 4. Then type in the same password you use to log into MyGateway and click on Sign in.

Step 5. Once you are logged in, click on your Student ID # in the upper right corner. Then click on View account.

Step 6. Then click on UPDATE INFO on the Security info tile near the center.

Step 7. This will bring up your Security info for your Fullerton College email account. (Now on your cell phone you will need to download the Microsoft Authenticator App). The App symbol looks like the image below.  Once you have downloaded the App you will need to add your Fullerton College student email address within the App by clicking the plus symbol in the upper right corner.  When asked you will need to choose “Work or school account” type in your Fullerton College Student email i.e. [email protected].

Step 8. Now on your computer you will need to click on Add a sign-in method

Step 9. In the Add a method pop-up window click on the drop down menu and chose Authenticator app

Step 10. Then on your computer you should see a QR code. On your phone you should be prompted for the QR code and then point your phone to the QR code to sync the setup of the Microsoft Authenticator App.

Step 11. Once it has synced you should be prompted on your phone from the App to type in a 2 digit number. The 2 digit number will display on your computer.  Type in the 2 digit number on your phone and then click on Yes.

Step 12. (If you do not get the pop-up) on your phone to enter the 2 digit number then on your computer then click on “I cant use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now”.

Step 13. Then on your computer click on “Use a verification code”

Step 14. Then look at the 6 digit code that changes every 30 seconds.  You will need to enter this 6 digit code on your computer.

You should be now be set up to use the Microsoft Authenticator App to log into your Fullerton College Student email account.  i.e. [email protected].

Congratulations! You're on your way!
