How to Reset Your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Updated on

Audience: Fullerton College students and staff

Overview: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) secures your FCNet account (e.g., [email protected] or [email protected]) and MyGateway by requiring a second verification method (e.g., SMS, Microsoft Authenticator). You can reset MFA methods yourself if multiple methods are registered or contact ACT for assistance if you’ve lost access (e.g., stolen phone). This article covers both options for FCNet and MyGateway.

Prerequisites

  • For Self-Service:
    • Your FCNet email address or MyGateway username (8-digit Banner ID).
    • Access to at least one registered MFA method (e.g., SMS, Microsoft Authenticator).
    • A device with a web browser.
  • For ACT Assistance:
    • Your FCNet email address or MyGateway username.
    • A valid photo ID (e.g., student/staff ID, driver’s license, passport).
    • A device for in-person (ACT kiosk) or remote (Zoom screensharing) verification.
  • MFA Methods:
    • FCNet (since 2024): Only Microsoft Authenticator app (iOS/Android) or SMS text to a cellular device.
    • MyGateway: SMS text, alternate email, or authenticator app (subject to NOCCCD discretion, may change).

Instructions

Option 1: Self-Service MFA Reset (if you have access to current MFA methods)

  1. Access Security Settings:

    Update MFA Methods:

    • On the Security Info page:
      • View current methods (e.g., Phone – Text, Microsoft Authenticator).
      • Click Add method to register a new method (e.g., new phone number, Authenticator app).
      • For Authenticator, download the Microsoft Authenticator app (iOS/Android), scan the QR code, and verify with a code.
      • For SMS, enter your phone number, receive a 6-digit code, and verify.
    • Set the new method as your default if needed (e.g., Change > Select “Microsoft Authenticator – notification”).
    • Remove old methods (e.g., old phone number) by clicking Delete.

      For MyGateway:
      • Go to https://mg.nocccd.edu/.
      • Sign in with your Banner ID (e.g., 01234567) and password.
      • Navigate to Login Management.
      • Change accordingly.

  2. Test the New Method:
    • Sign out and back into o365.fullcoll.edu (FCNet) or mg.nocccd.edu (MyGateway).
    • Verify using the new method (e.g., approve Authenticator notification, enter SMS code).

Option 2: ACT-Assisted MFA Reset

  1. Contact ACT:
    • Email [email protected] or call (714) 992-7111.
    • Provide your FCNet email address or MyGateway username.
    • Explain the issue (e.g., lost/stolen phone, broken device).
  2. Verify Identity:
    • In-Person (Recommended):
      • Visit Building 500, Room 517 with a valid photo ID.
      • Use an ACT kiosk for secure MFA reset (preferred for FCNet).
    • Remote:
      • Schedule a Zoom session with ACT.
      • Show your photo ID via camera and screenshare your device.
  3. Reset MFA:
    • ACT can provide you with a means to access your account and help you register new MFA (e.g., new phone number, Authenticator app).
    • Follow ACT’s instructions to set up the new method (e.g., scan QR code for Authenticator).
    • For MyGateway, ACT may escalate to NOCCCD IS HelpDesk if non-Microsoft methods (e.g., alternate email) are involved.
  4. Test Access:
    • Sign in to o365.fullcoll.edu (FCNet) or mg.nocccd.edu (MyGateway).
    • Verify the new MFA method works. Contact ACT if issues persist.

Notes

  • FCNet MFA Restrictions: Since 2024, FCNet supports only Microsoft Authenticator or SMS text (no alternate email or other apps).
  • MyGateway MFA: Supports SMS, alternate email, or authenticator apps, but options may change per NOCCCD policy. Check with ACT or IS HelpDesk.
  • Recommendation: Register multiple MFA methods (e.g., Authenticator and SMS) to enable self-service resets.
  • Security: Never share MFA codes or Authenticator access. Report suspected breaches to [email protected].
  • Processing Time: Self-service is immediate; ACT-assisted resets take 1–3 business days, longer during peak periods.
  • Travel/Connectivity: Microsoft Authenticator generates 6-digit codes offline for FCNet logins (see FAQ).
  • Policy Compliance: MFA usage must follow NOCCCD’s Acceptable Use Policy.

FAQs

Can I reset MFA if I have only one registered method?
No, you need ACT assistance (Option 2) with ID verification if you can’t access your sole method (e.g., lost phone).

What if I’m traveling abroad with no cell service?
Use Microsoft Authenticator’s offline 6-digit codes for FCNet. For MyGateway, use an alternate email (if registered) or contact ACT for assistance.

Why is FCNet limited to Microsoft Authenticator or SMS?
Since 2024, FCNet has been standardized for security and compatibility, limiting to these methods.

Can I use a non-smartphone for MFA?
For FCNet and MyGateway, SMS text should work for non-smartphones, may be limited by device/carrier and level of service. Hardware tokens (MFA keychains may be available on a case-by-case basis).

What if I need MyGateway MFA help beyond ACT’s scope?
ACT will escalate to NOCCCD IS HelpDesk for complex issues (e.g., alternate email setup).
